Today, I would like to show you how easy it is to use business intelligence software to track actual performance against the targets you set for your business in the annual sales budget. And do this every day or whenever you wish, in just one click.

You see, business intelligence software works by taking a snapshot every day – or in real time – of all the sales data stored in your ERP or accounting system.

By matching actual sales to your sales budget for the same period, the software will instantly show you whether you are on track or ahead or perhaps behind. In granular detail, not just by overview.

With the detail grouped up and filtered for you, it’s incredibly easy to drill down into the data so you can pinpoint exactly why something has gone well or perhaps, not so well – and therefore what you might need to do to get back on track.

In this example we are looking at Sales invoice data by value.

You can see each month’s sales along with the budget for that month, and the variances. This budget data is actually set at the customer level and algorithms in the software enable it to display the appropriate budgets that go with the invoice data you’ve selected.

This means that if you look at the sales for a particular sales rep then the budget you see will likewise be the total of the budgets for all of the customers of that rep.

If you drill down to see more detail for a particular period you can see the target and variances for each and every customer – including those that didn’t actually buy anything in the month.

But you probably want to budget for several different metrics, such as perhaps, gross profit. So again, you can choose to view your data using that metric and the algorithms will find and present the appropriate data, in this case for a gross profit budget, set for each Stock Type
